The public library is a place where imaginative minds can explore new worlds and find opportunities to learn and grow. That’s why the Free Library of Philadelphia was the perfect site to host the launch of PA Humanities’ new book of poems collected from Philadelphia school children as part of 2023’s Rain Poetry pilot project.

From The Field

We believe in contributing our learnings to the larger conversation about the role of the humanities in creating lasting change. We put participatory research at the forefront of all our work and partner with scholars, consultants, and a cross-sector of leaders including University of Pennsylvania’s PennPraxis, Elizabeth Myrick + Associates, and Allegheny Intermediate Unit.

🎟️ Get your tickets! Our 50th anniversary Voices of History initiative kicks off on May 30 at 7pm at @augustwilsonculturalcenter in Pittsburgh with a conversation with @isabelwilkerson winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the National Humanities Medal. She is a dynamic presence and will speak on the importance of stories that shape the Black American experience.

Voices of History is a statewide program to collect and celebrate the stories, family histories, struggles, and triumphs of Black Pennsylvanians in the 20th and 21st centuries. It is made possible with the generous support of The August Wilson African American Cultural Center, @erie_insurance, @theheinzendowments, Tom Hagen, and @nehgov through United We Stand: Connecting Through Culture.

🌟 Huge shout-out to our dedicated board and staff team who represented us at Humanities on the Hill this year! Their passion and commitment to advocating for the humanities shone brightly as they met with a record 16 out of 17 representatives/their staff and both Senators/their staff. They discussed the importance of funding @nehgov and shared findings from our recently released PA CultureCheck study.

A special thank you to everyone who took the time to meet with us. Offices/Reps pictured here: @repdwightevans, @congressmanboyle, @repchrissyhoulahan, @repbrianfitz, and @summerleeforpa.
