Who may apply for Commonwealth Speakers?
Any nonprofit organization that is planning a public program.

How many speakers may I apply for each year?
Normally, one. If you feel that a second speaker at your site would enhance the role your organization plays in increasing public understanding of the humanities, you may apply for a second by submitting a paragraph explaining how hosting a second speaker will further this goal. If you or a friend of your organization supports the PHC with a gift of $300 or more, you may apply for up to three presentations.

Is there a cost?
Typically, the PHC offers this program free-of-charge. When a speaker requires overnight accommodations, applicants are normally responsible for the hotel charge. The speaker's honorarium and other travel expenses remain the responsibility of the PHC. Exceptions include universities and membership-driven groups, who are subject to restrictions.

How do I apply for a Commonwealth Speaker?
Print the online application form [PDF, 895K], complete it, and mail or fax it to the PHC along with documentation of your nonprofit status. Be sure to indicate two possible dates for the speaker on the application form, and to list an alternate speaker in case your preferred speaker is unavailable.

What is "cost-sharing"?
The total value of the labor, services, materials, and location that your organization is providing in order to host a presentation. You must list this amount on your application.

When should I submit my application to the PHC?
At least eight weeks prior to the desired program date. Applications received less than eight weeks in advance may be rejected.

When will I find out if my application is approved?
Approximately three weeks after we receive your application. All applications are subject to approval and availability of funds. Applicants may not contact a speaker to arrange a program without first having their application approved.

How much time should I allow for the presentation?
Approximately 90 minutes to two hours.

What should be my estimated attendance for the program?
The PHC expects applicants to recruit an audience of no fewer than 25 people. You will receive a publicity packet advising you on promoting your presentation, and you are welcome to contact the Commonwealth Speakers Coordinator for counseling on speaker selection and event promotion.

ALL PENNSYLVANIANS WELCOME!
All Commonwealth Speakers presentations must be free-of-charge, open to the public, and promoted as such. You may not charge a fee, require a donation, or demand any other monetary contribution from your audience.
